Every Color Tells A Story: Natural Dye Workshop

Do you like weaving, crocheting, or sewing? Have you ever wondered what makes the yarn have beautiful colors? Natural dyes have been around for nearly 30,000 years; the practice of processing and producing dyes has been passed down from generation to generation. Join Ashley Reiske, IAIS Museum Educator and events coordinator, for a family-friendly, interactive workshop on natural dyes. Followed by a brief presentation on the history and significance of natural dyes in Indigenous communities, participants will create natural dyes using powdered and dried plants to decorate their own unique scarf. Spend a colorful afternoon learning about natural dyes in Indigenous communities while making a unique project for yourself, or a special person in your life. 

Please note: Natural dyes can temporarily dye your hands and clothing. Latex-free gloves will be available, but we suggest wearing clothing that you do not mind getting dirty. Although all dyes used in this workshop will be non-toxic, the minimum age for this workshop is 6 years old.
