Meet Gabriel Benjamin, Executive Director
Dear Friend,
I am honored by my appointment as Executive Director of the Institute for American Indian Studies. For almost 10 years, I have had the privilege of helping to lead the education department at this museum.
From my perspective, IAIS is more than just a museum and research center; we are a community. We are an organization that offers intergenerational learning experiences, meaningful programs, and thought-provoking exhibits. We celebrate the strength that comes from diverse perspectives. Our programs and exhibits rely on understandings of Indigenous oral tradition and ecological knowledge, as well as “Western” disciplines such as archaeology, anthropology, and ecology. We welcome visitors of all ages and backgrounds to connect with the long and complex history of Indigenous communities through these various lenses. We also encourage folks to gain a deeper appreciation for the dynamic and vibrant cultures of contemporary Indigenous communities.
During my tenure in the education department, I have witnessed the positive impact of our mission. Nonetheless, even as we conclude the celebration of our first 50 years, I also recognize that this juncture provides us a moment of reflection. As we plan new exhibits and programs to enhance our messages, we recommit ourselves to teaching a part of history that is often ignored, with input from contemporary Indigenous voices, as well as scholars across various disciplines. Together, and in collaboration with both Native and non-Native individuals and organizations, we can continue to ethically honor Indigenous communities past, present, and future.
As we embark upon this new chapter for the museum, I express gratitude for members, friends, staff, volunteers and community partners who have helped to sustain this organization. We appreciate your ongoing support.
Sincerely,
Gabriel Benjamin
IAIS Executive Director
