Brown Bag Book Club

The Institute for American Indian Studies 38 Curtis Road, Washington, CT, United States

Bring your lunch and love of books! Each month we will read and discuss a new book over a meal. This month, join IAIS staff in a discussion of Charles C. Mann’s bestselling book 1491. Mann describes life in the pre-Columbus Americas with wit, intelligence and a dash of awe. With an ambitious scope, Mann paints a detailed portrait of the Americas and describes the “New World” Civilizations that rose long before Europeans “discovered” them. Included in price of admission: $10 Adults; $8 Seniors; $6 Children; IAIS Members free.

Litchfield Hills Archaeology Club Lecture Series: CT Indians in the US Colored Infantry

The Institute for American Indian Studies 38 Curtis Road, Washington, CT, United States

Historians have often considered “colored” Civil War units through the lens of African-American history only. As a result, the accepted historical narrative regards United States Colored Troops as regiments consisting solely of African-American men, neglecting the Indian men and individuals of Indian descent who also served alongside their African American comrades. In actuality, such units contained Native American men from the region along with individuals from China, East India, Hawaii, St. Helena and Spain. Join military historian David Naumec in a discussion of Connecticut Indians’ participation in the Civil War.
Fee: $5 General Public; LHAC Members free.
